How much does it cost to get a HGV licence?

The actual cost of an HGV licence isn’t that high- what costs money is the training. A provisional licence will cost about £50, and you’ll need a medical too. That costs up to about £100.

An average training course can cost anything between £600 and £1,000, and if you need training after that you’ll have to pay more. For example, every driver needs a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and that can cost you extra.

Combined, it’s a lot of money to spend up front, so consider looking into grants and schemes to see if you can subsidise the price with some external help to get you started. And remember- a HGV driver can earn up to about £600 a week, so it pays to think of your training as an investment.
