Who we are

We are a recruitment business specialising in finding temporary and permanent jobs for professional drivers, warehouse staff and industry experts within the transport, distribution, industrial and utilities sectors.

Our approach is pretty simple – we like to think that when someone starts working with us they join the Milestone community. So, we aim to be helpful, honest, professional and fun. We also aim to pay our drivers and warehouse workers as much as we can. Loyalty and satisfaction are everything for us which is why we are the first agency to launch a driver reward scheme (have a look on the “Smile Miles” page). It sounds cheesy but once you join us, you become one of our Colleagues with a capital C.

If you are a Client then you can expect from us the highest levels of customer service and creative thinking. We try and combine the best of “hands on” practical delivery with technology that is designed to increase efficiency and cut operational costs. We think that our Clients want to work with a true partner, which is why we always try to understand their business and come up with the best solution possible even if that occasionally means being too honest!

Our history

We’ve had quite a colourful and exciting journey to get where we are now. We began life in 2005 hoping to bring something new to the driver recruitment industry. Five years on, we think we’ve done that a little bit, and still have lots of great ideas that we want to introduce. The story so far:

  • May 2005 – the idea for Milestone born, incubated by our parent company Methods Consulting.
  • August 2005 – our first customer, the RH Group, comes on board.
  • November 2005 – we begin working with DHL.
  • March 2006 – we start working with Wincanton.
  • June 2006 – Milestone Operations Ltd incorporated.
  • April 2007 – we start working with Eddie Stobart.
  • June 2008 – we start working with National Grid.
  • August 2009 – we launch the Driver Management System at our DHL Sainsbury’s account in the South East.
  • June 2010 – The Driver Management System goes live across the Iceland network.
  • January 2011 – we open our first branch in Warrington.
  • February 2011 – we open our second branch in Bristol.
  • February 2011 – Milestone Motivise! event held.
  • May 2011 – we open our third branch in Hatfield.
  • June 2011 – our brand new website launched.
  • June 2011 – Milestone blog launched.
  • September 2011 – we start working with Norbert Dentressangle.
  • November 2011 – our driver rewards scheme Smile Miles goes live.
  • April 2012 – Milestone wins DHL warehouse and distribution contract.

Brake Charity

Milestone supports the “Road Safety Week’’, which is the UK's biggest road safety event, coordinated annually by the Brake Charity and involving thousands of schools, organisations and communities each year. The dates for the Road Safety Week are 18-24 November 2013. The subject of road safety if close to our hearts as we deploy hundreds of drivers on the road daily.

Amber Charity

Amber is a charity, which provides 24 hour care and support to young, unemployed people every day of the year. It provides young people with a challenging and engaging step-by-step rebuilding process designed to help them overcome each of the obstacles that have previously stood between them and independent living. Working in teams they experience positive peer support and feel valued and motivated. Milestone as a temporary work agency are committed to fund raising events for Amber. We are currently working towards a more structured approach of the cooperation with Amber involving professional training for the young unemployed. Our driver management system

Milestone’s Driver Management System (the DMS) is a completely unique driver performance management system that has been designed and developed by us. The main goal of the DMS is to help improve driver performance and thereby introduce operational cost savings for our customers. It is a modular system that can be tailored to our Clients. The different modules are:

A Booking Module – the booking module is a completely transparent connection between the Client and the agency. At one end the Client inputs their requirements, at the other we use our system to match start times to available drivers and create a fully version-controlled plan. The whole process is visible to our Clients who can see the plan built throughout the day, removing the problem of nasty surprises just before it’s time to go home!

A Compliance and AWR Module – this is a plug-in to our Booking Module that alerts the user to any Driver’s Hours or AWR issues as daily plans are being developed. The DMS keeps track of shifts being worked and individual AWR Qualifying Periods ensuring that the user has the maximum amount of information to make them fully compliant.

A Driver Passport Module – we maintain complete performance records of all of our drivers, including infringements, shifts worked, professional history and so on, all according to the parameters set down by the Data Protection legislation. The DMS allows us to establish secure areas for each of our customers to do the same for their drivers.

A Debrief Module –we all know how time consuming it is to maintain accurate records of driver activity that are comprehensive enough to support useful performance management. The DMS allows you to do this at the click of a button with every debrief and have it immediately accessible, without having to search through filing cabinets, folders and endless spreadsheets.

A Reporting Module – if it’s Management Information you want then the DMS can help. It has a reporting tool that allows you to run reports on virtually everything in the system in whatever way you want. You can monitor KPIs, set SLAs, or generate compliance lists with just a few clicks.

A Partner Agency Module – the DMS is integrated into our Lead Vendor model and has been designed to allow Partner Agencies to use it to plan, book and manage drivers in a completely fair and transparent way that can be monitored by the Customer and the Partner Agencies.

Optimal Mix of Drivers

We’ve always thought that the very best driver agencies don’t just give you a “bum on a seat”, but the perfect mix of professionals to compliment your core transport team.

We’ve tried to put ourselves in your shoes and ask the question: if you’ve a regular requirement for a number of extra drivers a day, do you want them all to be “spot” drivers at high rates, or do you want them to be a combination of “spot” drivers (to cover the peak shifts) and “FTE” drivers, with a small guarantee, (to cover the regular work) at lower rates, giving you a saving?

That’s why we’ve developed a sophisticated piece of diagnostic consultancy (with the snappy title “the Optimal Mix of Drivers report”!) that we offer for free and will help you to work out exactly what type of driver you want, when you want them, as well as what guarantees to offer and what savings you can expect. It also works brilliantly with the Agency Worker Regulations, fitting in neatly with the most popular solutions (Professional exclusion, Swedish derogation etc).

This is not only good for you but, where guarantees can be offered, also good for the drivers. They know that in exchange for loyalty and great performance, they can get the security of guaranteed work.

Our take on Agency Worker regulations

We appreciate that the Agency Worker Regulations are pretty complicated and are likely to mean there are significant changes to the way agencies provide their services. To make sure that we get things right, and are totally compliant, we’ve retained the best legal advice (please see and consulted extensively with our customers.

Whilst things may change as guidance is issued and the regulations are tested by law, we think that we have come up with a robust and flexible approach to the legislation that dovetails neatly with our service offerings:

  1. Put simply, we suggest a composite approach to the regulations – combining the best elements of Professional Exclusion, Swedish Derogation and so on, in a carefully worked out formula that protects your reputation, our drivers and provides the most legal comfort.
  2. Our Optimal Mix of Drivers finds the perfect balance of drivers for your site, and also ties in with our composite approach to AWR.
  3. We’ve developed an AWR module for our Driver Management System that automatically tracks a driver’s qualifying periods, rest periods and pay giving you the comfort that we are managing our drivers properly.

The Smile Miles rewards scheme

We believe that it’s all about the drivers. If we can make sure that our drivers are happy and productive then we’re pretty sure that our Clients will be happy too. That’s why we’ve launched the “Smile Miles” Rewards Scheme. We think that this is an industry first.

It’s pretty simple really. When one of our drivers performs well at work, we award them with “miles” (the number of miles earned depends on what they’ve done). The driver can bank these “miles” or, if they reach a “milestone” (did you see what we did there!) of a certain number of “miles” they can exchange them for rewards. Our rewards range from things that our drivers might need for work (a hi-vis parka, or money for training), to treats for the wife (vouchers for a romantic meal for two), or an excuse for a night out (tickets to the game or a concert).

Our colleague development promise

We don’t think it’s enough just to get a driver work. We want to try and get a driver a job that gives him or her the potential to develop. What we offer to our Colleagues depends on where they are in their career with us and options include:

  1. CPC training – as part of the “Big Rig” Rewards Scheme our drivers can exchange “miles” for CPC training.
  2. Class 2 to Class 1 conversion – we are partners with Advantage HGV, the country’s largest network of training providers. That means we can offer our guys preferential training rates. Our drivers can also earn “miles” in our rewards scheme that they can exchange for training vouchers.
  3. Career Progression – Most of our drivers will start with us as “Pay as you go” drivers. What we like to try and offer them is the chance to progress into an FTE driving role, (with the chance to earn guaranteed hours), and finally employees, as a reward for loyalty and good performance. We’ve thought about this one pretty carefully and have tied this in closely with our Optimal Mix of Drivers consultancy and our approach to the Agency Worker Regulations.

Many moons ago when we started Milestone, we had an exclusive partnership with our European partner Paracross. Our relationship has gone from strength to strength since then and they continue to provide us with top quality European drivers for those areas in the UK where finding home-grown talent is difficult.

Our goal is to give our applicants a recruitment experience that is super-friendly, efficient and responsive. At the same time, we want to make sure that our process is extremely thorough and complies with all aspects of recruitment legislation and health and safety that are important to our Clients. We do this for the simple reason that we want to provide our Clients with the best possible drivers and workers who will deliver the best possible service and remain with us and our Clients for as long as possible. We know that if we get it right at this point, we’ve laid the best foundations for later on.

The process that we follow is set down in our procedural “bible” and following it is “company law”! We run regular internal audits to make sure that this is happening, as well as 6 monthly audits of any Partner Agencies we work with. The stages of recruitment are:

Stage 1 – Screening

  • Telephone interview
  • Contact details taken
  • Licence details taken (if applicable)
  • Experience checked
  • Endorsements checked
  • Working eligibility checked

Successful applicants are invited to register face to face with our Site or Branch Managers within 72hrs of their initial application.

Stage 2 – Registration

  • Face to face interview with trained manager
  • Experience details confirmed
  • Licence details confirmed (if applicable)
  • Identity details confirmed & copies taken
  • DVLA check completed (if applicable)
  • References taken
  • Psychometric test taken
  • Driver’s Hours and Tachograph legislation theory test taken (if applicable)
  • WTD theory test taken
  • Health and Safety theory test taken
  • Numeracy & literacy tests taken

Successful applicants are put forward for a Client Assessment where their practical skills are verified by our client’s own driving assessors. It is our goal to do this within 1 week of the applicant first applying for the job.

  • Client Assessment (exact details depend on our client, but are likely to include:)
  • Driving practical assessment (for drivers)
  • Theory assessments (Driver’s Rules, Tachograph legislation, WTD)
  • Licence details confirmed (for drivers)
  • Identity details confirmed

Successful applicants are then invited to become fully-fledged Milestone Colleagues and we aim to have them starting work immediately, no later than 48hrs after the assessment.
